Guide to the Best Spots in Wimbledon

When you hear Wimbledon, you may think tennis, strawberries and cream and Henman Hill (or is that Murray Mound?). 

But there’s much more to this chic south west London neighbourhood.

Yes, it’s home to the world-famous All England Club, which every year hosts one of the biggest sporting competitions in the world. But if tennis isn’t your thing, there are plenty of other things to see and do.

Wimbledon Common is arguably the area’s crown jewel. With more than 1,100 acres of greenery as well as cycle paths, horse riding trails, even a golf course, you could spend hours, even days, exploring this slice of countryside in the middle of the city. It’s also home to a variety of events throughout the year, including a Christmas carol concert and autumn bird walks. 

Towards the middle of the Common is the Wimbledon Windmill Museum, which, as the name suggests, is dedicated to the development of Britain’s windmills. A must-see for any historians or anyone with a keen interest in windmills!

There are also a number of smaller parks to explore in the area. Just a five minute walk from the town centre, South Park Gardens is notoriously popular with locals. Or there’s Wimbledon Park, located right next to the All England Club, which has a lake and watersports centre, as well as a paddling pool, play area and athletics track. 

If you’re looking for places to eat, Wimbledon won’t disappoint. Black Radish, serving seasonal British produce, is one of our favourite spots. It gets rave reviews for its inventive culinary creations and has a taster menu and chef’s table for a more special dining experience. 

The Orangery at Hotel du Vin is another local hotspot, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. It has sweeping views across Cannizaro Park, another of Wimbledon’s much-loved green spaces. 

If pubs are more your vibe, there are plenty to choose from. The iconic Dog and Fox with its comfy seating and roaring fires is one of our favourites on a cosy winter’s night. It also has a separate events space, perfect if you’re planning a work social. 

Another of our favourite pubs is Fire Stables, known for its relaxed atmosphere, impressive drinks selection and top notch food. The roasts are particularly well-loved and it’s so family-friendly, it even serves dog friendly roast dinners on Sundays. 

For a more traditional English pub, try the Rose and Crown. Just moments from the Common, it’s the perfect place to grab a drink after a long walk or a round of golf. This has become a true local favourite thanks to its selection or real ales and its secluded courtyard garden. Just be warned: it gets pretty busy during the Wimbledon tennis fortnight. 

If you’re looking for a bit of culture, the New Wimbledon Theatre is one of the area’s best-known landmarks. Opened in 1910, this Grade II listed building with its iconic green dome is well-loved by locals and visitors alike. It has a year-round programme of events, including musicals, family entertainment and its legendary pantomime. 

There’s also the Polka Children’s Theatre, which stages regular performances for babies, toddlers and children up to the age of 13 as well as workshops and classes. 

If art is your thing, Wimbledon won’t disappoint. Several small galleries have emerged in recent years, including the Ad Lib Gallery and Aubergine Art, joining more established names such as Hicks Gallery and Wimbledon Fine Art.

For something a bit more unusual, visit the “It’s Oh So Quiet” mural in the centre of town. Based on the hit single by Icelandic musician Björk, this artwork reflects how birdsong has reduced over time because of the population decline of house sparrows. 

Of course, if you’re a tennis fan, there’s really nowhere better to be. As well as Wimbledon fortnight, which takes place in late June and early July, there’s the Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Museum and Tour, which chronicles the rich history of the sport.
